Madrid based label Vampisoul is reissuing long lost music from Latin America and beyond. Their first release was a compilation of Peruvian Underground music from the 60s and 70s, including Peruvian funk, garage, psychedelia and chicha. Chicha is often described as “Peruvian cumbia” but it is more like a bastard genre of tradition crossed with modernity. It originated in the Amazonas region of Northern Perú around the time of the oil boom in the 60s. The music took influences from the local folklore and mixed it with rock ‘n’ roll or surf rock, tropical rhythms such as colombian cumbia and Andean scales and melodies. It was primarily, however, a music to dance to and a music of the people. Barbés has some fantastic background information for all their releases and they do a much better job than either wikipedia or myself at explaining the history of the music. Pau, a vocalist/producer from Mexico City whose amigos comprise a music/visual arts collective, has been having a remix contest for the original, which is a pretty straightforward disco track about how buzzards are gonna outlive us all because they like to kill and you know, have feathery backs and shit. Radioclit did a Funana mix. Most people dont even know where Cape Verde is and now there music is poppin up. Why? Hm I guess Radioclit listened to some Buraka Som Sistema and checked the neighboring countries for something to redo theirselfes. What they did on their “Fu (Na Na Na) Mix” is actually the same Buraka Som Sistema did to Angolas Kuduro. You take the original music and mix it with fitting, high tech western music till it passes the bouncer. Since Lissabons Kuduro scene is made up of as many Cape Verdians as Angolans (the countrys are connected since they shared a colonial occupant), I guess they´d go bananas over some pimped out Funana too. The only western guys who did that before is Schlachthof Bronx from Munich far as I know. Read more at schakkerhart.com

Cadenza boss Luciano revealed his Æther live performance project at Spain’s Monegros festival on 18th July, a project that is being billed as a “synchronization of sound and colour”. In this video you can see Luciano conducting his laptop symphony from the centre, with his back to the audience like a classical music conductor would guide an orchestra. Cadenza label mates Reboot, Mirko Loco, Lee Van Dowski, and Digitaline throw in sounds and percussion from their laptops using Ableton Live, whilst Luciano controls the incoming sounds via a touchscreen computer and what appears to be a Native Instruments Maschine, ultimately deciding what gets through.

On this day 30 years ago in 1979, Disco Demolition Night heralded the last days of disco. Disco started in small nightclubs in American urban centers in the early seventies with imported records such as “Soul Makossa.” During the 1970s disco steadily increased in popularity reaching a high point with Saturday Night Fever in 1977.
This was followed with a homophobic, racist backlash two years later when rock music fans started to consider disco culture — with its perceived drug-fuelled sexual promiscuity — silly and effeminate, and objected to the idea of centering music around an electronic drum beat and synthesizers instead of live performers. Parodies of disco music became common. The backlash was epitomized in Chicago by the riotous Disco Demolition Night. Now, for the first time on this blog: local news coverage of this Dionysian moment.

Black Eyed Peas mainman Will.i.am decided to remix “I Got it From My Momma,” the first single off his just-released solo album, with a big, chunky sample of Daft Punk’s “Around the World,” he must of figured the Frenchies would be honored and more than willing to take the royalty money and run. He was so certain, in fact, that he shot an entire video for the remix, replete with Tron-inspired graphics that look oddly similar to Daft Punk’s own awe-inspiring encore outfits from this summer’s Alive 2007 tour. Apparently though, Will.i.am moved faster than the lawyers, who were forced to deliver the message that Daft Punk doesn’t think their music sounds better with him. Read more at dailyswarm.

I´m very pro sampling, its our way of being creative since the dawn of humanity. I just the last 100 years with the dawn of recorded media that the idea of copyright etc. made an impact. In my opinion though its very crucial to declare the sample source. With no reference to the original sample, there is no music journey to be followed. Shame on you Black Eyed Peas (and the majority of the dance music scene) ! (via dailyswarm)

I made this mashup mix back in 2007 for a Radio Station. It features over 100 tracks and snippets, unfortunately i don´t have the track listing anymore. After just re-discovering the mix, i was pleasantly surprised that its still sort of current. Have a listen and tell me what you think about it.
